Whether you're a current S&CA member, or thinking of joining the Club, you are welcome to join us for the London Social from 7pm on the second Wednesday of the month.  We meet upstairs at Retro Bar, 2 George Court, London, WC2N 6HH, which is just off The Strand near Charing Cross.

Our monthly London Social has been an important part of S&CA life for decades.  With many of our members living in and around London, this has been a key forum for meeting skippers and crew, making plans, and sharing sailing stories. It's a great way for prospective members to get a feel for the Club and for new members to get to know people before setting sail.  You’re free to come along to this event but it helps us if you book so we know you’re coming.

    • East Coast, River Thames, St Katherine's Dock

After the successful event of last year we are again hoping that a few east coast boat owners will join in a rally up the Thames to spend a few days in St Katherine’s Dock. Participating boats and crew will rendezvous at Queenborough the evening of 24th June, (to allow for boats travelling from north of the estuary), and take the tide up the Thames on Tuesday 25th to arrive at St Katherine’s Dock in the afternoon. The trip up the Thames is extremely interesting, passing many well-known and historic landmarks, including impressive sites of the city that unfold once through the Thames Barrier, a memorable experience in itself. Stay duration will be at the discretion of each boat captain, but a few days is most likely, to allow for tourist activities.

Notes:   All East Coast events are run as a cruise in company. Skippers are responsible for their own passage plans.

There is no on-line registration for this event. All contact/attendance for further details and registration should be directed to the organiser.

Following club weeks to Ibiza in 2019, 2022 and 2023, we will be returning to Ibiza once more this year from Saturday 7 September 2024 to Saturday 14 September 2024.

In 2022, the flotilla consisted of a fleet of 6 yachts. Thirty three new and returning members were present and whilst several people did not know each other beforehand, many new friendships were created.

Ibiza has a reputation as being ‘the party island’, with thousands flocking there each year for hot days on the beaches and hotter nights at the mega-venues with world class DJ's flying in each week all summer. But there is another, more tranquil side to the islands of Ibiza, Formentera and Espalmador, if you know where to go and when. The Ibiza 'party season' traditionally starts in early May and concludes late September. But of course, the mass tourists tend to leave the islands in late August or early September. The 'White Island' boasts many hidden pristine sand beaches, away from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots, that can only be accessed, almost exclusively, by sea.

Early September is the absolute ideal time to visit Ibiza; the seas are warm, the weather is favourable, the island's atmosphere is still in full swing and flight/yacht charter availability/prices in September should be more favourable too.  The sailing is not challenging. There is no set itinerary.

Evenings, particularly on the western coast, provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world famous Ibiza sunsets, whilst enjoying a sundowner, on board barbeque or visit to a beach chiringuito. As with previous years, having stocked up for the week ahead at normal supermarket prices, before departing the charter base, most yachts tend to cater for themselves onboard during the week. But it is your holiday, so of course you are free to eat ashore if you prefer. The nights should all be at anchor or on a mooring buoy, only turning to a port if the conditions dictate this as absolutely necessary.

Feel free to contact Carl Hol (carlholvey@gmail.com ) direct if you want any more information. It goes without saying that the sooner we can firm up on numbers and secure flight reservations and bookings with charter companies, the better. We very much look forward to welcoming you to Ibiza.

The Blue Cruise is a one-week boat trip on the Aegean coast of Turkiye. It is considered one of the most spectacular boating destinations in the world. We will have six days to explore beautiful beaches, quiet islands, and ancient archaeological sites.

The trip begins in Bodrum, a popular resort town in Turkiye. You should schedule your flight to arrive at least 2 days in advance so there's time to acclimate and explore the area. Bodrum is known for its active club scene; see the website https://queerintheworld.com/gay-bodrum-turkey-travel-guide/ for details. Note that Turkiye is a conservative muslim country so discretion is advised.

The cruise will finish in Marmaris, another scenic destination on the Aegean sea. I recommend you schedule your return flights to allow at least two full days for exploring or relaxing in Marmaris.

This is a not-for-profit trip that I am organizing for fun. The charter operator BlueCruise.org is 100% responsible for delivery of all services including the boat, crew, and meals. I have no affiliation with the charter operator.

    Steve

    TRIP DATES AND LOCATIONS

We will board the boat on Saturday afternoon, 21 September. The boat will be docked at the marina in Bodrum. We will disembark on Friday afternoon, 27 September at a dock near Marmaris. There will be a fee for transportation from the dock to the Marmaris city center (amount TBD). Be sure to have accommodations booked in Marmaris for at least one night.

    THE BOAT

The boat we have reserved for the cruise is a traditional Turkish motor-sailor called a gulet. There are six guest cabins that can accommodate one or two people, and each has ensuite toilet and shower. There is a shaded seating / dining area in the aft end of the boat, and a set of sun loungers in the forward area. The boat is equipped with sails but will likely be motoring in order to reach all planned destinations.

The boat and crew for this cruise are being booked through BlueCruise.org in Bodrum and they are 100% responsible for delivery of the contracted services. You can view pictures of the gulet "Ceyda 2" on their website at:

    More details: https://gulet-fleet.blue-cruise.org/ceyda/

    COST

The cost for six days accommodation onboard (in a shared cabin with double bed) is US$550 per person. Full board service (3 meals per day) is an additional US$272 per person. The total cost (shared cabin plus meal service) is US$822 per person.

Single guests have the option of booking an entire cabin for themselves at a cost of US$1100 (plus US$272 for meals). If you book a cabin as a single, you can always switch it to a shared cabin later if you decide you want a roommate. The second person would just need to pay the US$272 fee for meals.

Prices are subject to adjustment due to variations in currency exchange.

    FLIGHTS

Passports are required for flights to Turkiye, and must be valid for at least six months after your entry into the country. A tourist visa is also required, and may be purchased on arrival at Istanbul airport. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unexpected circumstances that prevent you from attending. Check the web page at https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com for rates.

    AVAILABILITY

There are six cabins on the boat. At this time there are three cabins available.

    Cabin 1: Booked

    Cabin 2: Booked

    Cabin 3: Booked

    Cabin 4: Available

    Cabin 5: Available

    Cabin 6: Available

Cabins will be reserved on a first-come-first served basis. A deposit of US$366 is required to reserve a cabin. Deposits can be paid via PayPal.com to socasteve1@gmail.com. Once all deposits are received I will transfer the money to the charter operator BlueCruise.org.

If you pay the deposit then find you can't attend the trip, you can transfer your cabin to anyone you wish without penalty. If we're unable to fill that cabin with another particpant your deposit will be forfeited.

Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unexpected circumstances that prevent you from attending or that disrupt the charter trip in Turkiye. Travel insurance is available from https://www.allianztravelinsurance.com

Storage space aboard the boat is limited, so pack lightly. A few shirts, 2 pairs of shorts, and a swim suit will suffice, plus a hoodie for after sunset when it's much cooler. If you plan to visit mosques in Istanbul (or anywhere else in Turkiye) you will probably need a pair of long pants.

Street shoes with dark soles are discouraged on the boat as they can mark up the deck surface. Bring a pair of boat shoes or lightweight water shoes with white soles for use onboard. Temu.com has cheap options for around $20/pair.

Power outlets in Turkiye are European-style round prongs at 220 volts, so bring an adapter for your phone charger. The boat is equipped with WiFi but availability will depend on where the boat is docked/anchored each night.

The charter operator provides bed linens for the cabins, but bring your own towel (and a hat) for excursions to the beaches. It might be a problem carrying sunscreen on flights into Turkiye (especially aerosols) but it's easy to buy once you arrive in Bodrum for the cruise.

For early birds, a meal at 17:45 at Pizza Express, 450 Strand, London, WC2R 0TG is organised as a separate event. If you wish to attend the Pizza Express meal, please book using the separate event booking.

If you can’t make the pizza, the Landlord is more than happy for you to bring food or even order a pizza for delivery.

For those who live further afield, if the occasional journey into London isn't practical, keep an eye out for local social events (e.g. Brighton and Bristol). If you're keen to attend or help organise a local social elsewhere in the country, please contact:  social@gaysailing.org.uk
